Millennium joins school in tackling dementia

3 minute read

A local primary school has partnered with Millennium to raise awareness of dementia and fundraise for the Alzheimer’s Society.

As a school initiative each year group at Wood Fold Primary School, based in Standish, plans and executes a community project, the Year 4 wanted theirs to focus on dementia.

Ffion Caunce, a parent of a Year 4 student and the Home Manager at Windsor House Care Home, offered her support on the subject and has forged a valuable link with the school.

The primary school children have lots of ideas and big ambitions to try and raise awareness in the community with posters, social media campaigns and a memory walk through Standish alongside care home residents planned.

“The school’s community projects are a great way to do more in the local area, we’ve been reading a book linked to dementia which was the project’s inspiration.

“Ffion has been an amazing driver, and we can’t thank her enough. Her enthusiastic, passionate and positive approach has brought things into context. Dementia can be scary, but she made it child friendly and we’re so excited to put the children’s plans into action.”

Bethany Hunter, Assistant Head Teacher at Wood Fold Primary

“Dementia will affect all of us in some way so it’s important that there are educational opportunities around the condition. When my daughter told me what Year 4 was planning I had to get involved.

“I’m delighted I can share my knowledge with both students and teachers, as well as provide additional learning opportunities to them. As a care provider, we’re currently building Langtree Care Home in Standish, a specialised EMI care home. We’ll soon be arranging a site visit there and to another home, Worthington Lake, these visits will give the children an even deeper understanding of dementia!”

Alongside their awareness and fundraising initiatives, students have pledged to visit local Millennium Care homes and offer their support in any way they can.
